Gallery & Links to Sample Work
The following are links to some samples of work. Please note that much of our work is internal to clients and hance we are restricted in the material we can make publicly available. We suggest you also review the presentations made at our annual conference which illustrate a wider range of our projects.
National Biodiversity Data Centre Mapping System
Compass Informatics operate the National Biodiversity Data Centre for Ireland under a service level agreement. We have designed and developed the large data management system, the public mapping system, and methods for serving via web services the data out to the GBIF worldwide data sharing system.
The mapping system now holds over 1.6 million records for land and marine species - all structured according to standard taxonomies and with associated metadata. We are currently upgrading and enhancing the system to be more interactive and to include more tools for use by local planners and other similar users. Technology: We use ESRI ArcGIS Server with the Compass Silverlight API, SQL Server and C# coding, with all systems hosted on an infrastructure we have created and maintain.

Pobal Rural Transport and Demographics Solution
Pobal are a cross departmental government company who are charged with delivery of many community services. One of these - flexible rural transport - now has its own mapping system that up to 37 community groups use to share information on routes they service. Following on the success of that system another spinoff mapping system was developed that presents demographic data to the public and internally - supporting decision making on other programmes such as childcare. To view the public system visit maps.pobal.ie or www.pobal.ie. Technology: The solution uses the Compass Silverlight map viewer based on the Esri Silverlight API.
3D Flythrough
Using ERDAS image processing and terrain modelling software we created a simple demonstration 'fly-about' that shows some of our own digital aerial imagery overlain on the terrain model generated itself in the image processing stage.
Compass operate GPS encoded aerial imagery and also ground spatial video systems. These are systems we have designed in house and in partnership with research bodies. We take this imagery or that from other sources and process using ERDAS and other software. The derived data then fits into management informaton systems we develop and support.

Wind & Geothermal Atlas with Bioenergy Mapping and Analysis System
Working for Sustainable Energy Ireland, we created a mapping and modelling solution which acts as an atlas for wind energy and for geothermal energy, and provides a modelling and analysis tool for bioenergy. The more complex bioenergy system allows assessment and reporting of current and potential bioenergy production and demand. The wind atlas is available by clicking here and the geothermal atlas here, while the bioenergy system is here.
The systems make extensive use of open source technologies and geospatial web services alongside .Net coding and SQL Server 2008. This reflects our hybrid approach to optimal use of open source and proprietary elements.
WaterMaps River Basin Management Plans Solution
The WaterMaps system and wfdireland.ie simple website were created by Compass under short timescales as tools to share information and data relating to River Basin Management Plans prepared under the EU Water Framework Directive.
WaterMaps includes extensive data management behind the scenes along with an interface that allows ready access to complex data. This is complimented with reporting features that all a site user to view and save reports for later consultation. The technology used was ESRI ArcGIS Server with SQL Server 2005 including Reporting Services. Coding was done in C# primarily.Click on the image on the right to go to the wfdireland.ie website and find the WaterMaps viewer.
Self Service Pre-Planning System - Web GIS & Reporting
Working with two local goverment authorities, Compass developed a Web-based tool to allow users assess the liklihood of obtaining planning permission for housing or other developments. The map-based system is now in active and popular use in seven authorities and has been the basis for other internal systems such as capital projects management.
The system is based on GeoMedia WebMap, SQL Server and ASP.Net coding. It uses a simple interface by user choice, and includes site digitising tools developed in-house.
PRISM Marine Modelling Web Map System
Under an Ireland-Wales Interreg project, Compass developed tools for integrating results from continuously-running marine models, into a WebGIS system. The mapping system allows the user to view wind, wave, current, storm surge, and temperature from models that update a number of times a day. The Compass system parses this data and optimises it for storage and display at a range of scales. The tools developed are readily extendible to other computational models and applications. Features such as alerts to coastal managers or vessel operators can also be provided. The system is built on custom tools developed in .Net, with other Oracle and ESRI technology elements.
