Pollinator-friendly containers in MaynoothTo mark a year since the publication of the All-Ireland Pollinator Plan, and the recent Junior Pollinator Plan publications – in both English and Irish – we provide a short overview of this important initiative. The National Biodiversity Data Centre is operated by Compass Informatics on behalf of the Heritage Council, Ireland. The Centre combines use of information technologies and analytics, with ecological and project delivery expertise.

Pollinators are an important part of our biodiversity. The service they provide is needed to ensure sustainable food production, avoid additional economic impact on the agricultural sector and to protect the health of the environment. Unfortunately Irish pollinators are in decline and the problem is serious. Of the 98 different types of bee on the island of Ireland, nearly one third are threatened with extinction. Our pollinators are declining because we are asking them to perform services in an increasingly inhospitable landscape. Just like us, pollinators need food and a place to live. Because we have less flowers (food) and places for pollinators to nest in our countryside, they are struggling to survive.

The All-Ireland Pollinator Plan 2015-2020 is a strategy that seeks to address this problem. It is a shared plan of action that brings together pollinator initiatives from the North and South, to allow us to collectively take positive steps to protect our pollinators. The Pollinator Plan is supported by more than 68 governmental and nongovernmental organisations from across the island. At its core, the Plan is about providing food and shelter for pollinators across all types of land, in order to bring about a landscape where they can survive and thrive.

Every sector has a role to play in making Ireland more pollinator friendly, from councils to businesses, farmers, gardeners, and local communities. To make sure these groups have all of the information they need to implement the Pollinator Plan, we’re creating pollinator friendly guidelines and other resources. All of our resources are free to download on the Pollinator Plan website.

To ensure the importance of pollinators and the things we can do to help them are communicated to the next generation, we have also published a Junior Version of the All-Ireland Pollinator Plan. English and Irish language versions of the Junior Plan are both available online. The Junior Pollinator Plan was produced in collaboration with the WillFredd Theatre and the Ark, and is supported by Green-Schools and Eco-Schools.

The implementation of the All-Ireland Pollinator Plan is being coordinated by The National Biodiversity Data Centre, and funded by The Heritage Council and Bord Bía.
