COMPASS'09 - ANNUAL CONFERENCE - JUNE 25TH 2009

On June 25th we held our annual conference at which over 150 people attended from a wide range of organisations with diverse interests. The feedback we have received has been overwhelming positive - but we are not sitting on our laurels and have undertaken a review of the event internally with a view towards on-going enhancement of conferences and seminars held by Compass. The EU INSPIRE Directive creates obligations for most public sector bodies that create geographical datasets. 3RD ANNUAL RECORDERS' EVENT: IRELAND'S FRESHWATER HABITATS

The National Biodiversity DAta Centre, operated by Compass Informatics on behlaf of the Heritage Council, Ireland, will host its 3rd Annual Recorders' Event on the 20th & 21st of August 2009. This year's theme is Ireland's Freshwater Habitats: Priorities for biodiversity data, and is being held in collaboration with the Environmental Protection Agency.

The event will be held on the WIT Main Campus, Cork Road, Waterford, Ireland. The programme for the event and booking form can be downloaded here. Places are limited so advance booking and payment is essential.

FOCUS ON...WATERMAPS

WaterMaps - the web-based public consultation tool at www.wfdireland.ie is under active use as part of the draft River Basin Management Plan consultation phase. Compass developed this tool to make available the complex data relating to the EU Water Framework Directive and the river basin planning process. This work was undertaken in partnership with RPS Consulting Engineers and under the NS2 project.

LAUNCH OFBIODIVERSITYIRELAND

On May 15th, the Minister for Environment, Heritage & Local Government in Ireland launched the data management and mapping system of the National Biodiversity Data Centre.

The web based system is open to all and allows ready access to information on species and habitats across Ireland. It is being used to tackle hot issues such as invasives species that damage native biodiversity and cause economic loss to fisheries, agriculture and infrastructure; and to provide information related to cliamte change such as the changing patterns of climate sensitive species such as moths and butterflies.
